October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, dedicated to recognizing the profound effects of domestic violence on individuals, families, and communities. According to Zipdo, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the United States will experience severe physical violence from an intimate partner during their lifetime. Wifitalents reports nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, totaling over 10 million people each year. Survivors face lasting consequences: Zipdo notes they have a 30% higher risk of chronic health conditions and are 10 times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population.
Domestic violence also imposes a significant economic burden, costing the United States over $8.3 billion each year in medical expenses, lost productivity, and related impacts (Wifitalents). Despite its prevalence, less than half of incidents are reported to law enforcement, and few victims receive immediate in-person support.
Bay Area Service League supports survivors in our community. In partnership with local nonprofits, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies, we provide Caring Kits containing essential materials to help victims leave safely after an attack and medical exam. These kits offer dignity, comfort, and practical support when individuals are most vulnerable.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we stand with survivors, support frontline advocates, and reaffirm our commitment to helping individuals restore their safety and independence.
