A Tour of The Bridge Over Troubled Waters and Reaffirmation of Bay Area Service League’s Support

Members Ina Lachmann and Mona Farid visited The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, one of Bay Area Service League’s philanthropic program partners, and spent time learning more about their organization. Some key takeaways are:

Over the past 20 years, The Bridge has significantly expanded from a small building into a compound consisting of three large structures. One building houses administrative staff and features a 100-bed dormitory for residents seeking shelter. The second building is dedicated to daycare services, while the third provides affordable housing.

The organization addresses the physical, emotional, financial, and safety needs of its residents. They collaborate with employment agencies to help residents secure jobs and achieve self-sufficiency.

A poignant display of red metal cutouts symbolizes women who have been killed by their abusers, while the thoughts and pain of the residents are expressed through T-shirts hung on the walls.

The Bridge offers shelter to residents for up to 30 days, assisting them in finding employment and creating financial plans for stability. Once residents secure a job, they can access housing in the affordable housing building, where they pay only 30% of their income.

Bay Area Service League supports The Bridge through two philanthropic programs:
Caring Kits include clothing, undergarments, and flip-flops, provided to individuals who have experienced an assault.

Ready for Work helps individuals prepare to re-enter the workforce or get ready for job interviews by providing suitable clothing. With the assistance of a committee member, items are selected from the league’s award-winning resale shop or purchased from a local discount department store if specific attire is needed.
